Enontekiö – True Lapland Experiences
In the armpit/arm of the Finnish maiden is a beautiful municipality called Enontekiö. It is Finland´s third largest municipality and well-known for its amazing fells and forests. Enontekiö is situated in the Northern Lapland, and the nearest airport is nearby in Hetta, so traveling doesn´t take too long!
The outstanding landscape of Fell-Lapland makes outdoor activities even more fun. You can go hiking in nearby nature, attend to canoe-trips, rent a fatbike and drive down the hills of beautiful fells. Snowshoeing, ice fishing and snowmobile trips are popular during the frosty wintertime, and of course the northern lights need to be mentioned! There´s less light pollution in this peaceful area, so the light show can be utterly stunning.
Enontekiö is truly a wide area. The accommodation services are concentrated in Hetta and Kilpisjärvi. Both offer travellers various selection of pleasant accommodation options, and the spectrum of restaurants guarantees customers a tasteful stay. Since located in Lapland, the restaurants offer a wide range of traditional Lappish foods, for example reindeer meat and forest mushrooms.
From Hetta you can start a 55 kilometres long hike to Pallas, which will start by boating over the Ounasjärvi. After long yet rewarding kilometres, you will get to the end of the route, Pallastunturi, where you can wash your sweat off and relax in Lapland Hotel Pallas.
When visiting Kilpisjärvi, you might even have difficulties to choose which fell to conquer, since there are so many breathtakingly beautiful fells. There are Saana, Finland´s highest mountain and Malla for example, which are nowadays also common Finnish names for women. You can choose a shorter or longer hiking trip, depending on your own strength and desires. And while being already that close to the border, why not visit Norway too, since it´s only 50 kilometres away
